Netflix is easily among the most popular paid video services on the internet, with more than 58 million subscribers in the United States, and more than 137 million globally, making the price hike an effective way to raise capital. Investors will be happy with the price increases, given the company’s debt shares were up 6 percent when the market opened this morning. Now, two years later, this most recent price hike is the first time in nearly a decade that no one will be able to access Netflix for 7.99 a month. Netflix had a negative cash flow of $3 billion in 2018 and is reportedly expecting about the same in 2019. The next year, in 2015, that standard plan went to 9.99, and two years later, both the standard and premium plans took a price jump, from 9.99 to 10.99, and 11.99 to 13.99, respectively. The streaming company is raising prices for UK subscribers by as much as 20 per cent, with the cost of the most popular standard plan increasing by £1 to £8. Netflix reportedly spent $8 billion on its house-produced films and TV shows in 2018 alone, and the company announced plans in October to take on an additional $2 billion in debt to finance new projects.
